Natural burial-aged after firing.
A scholarly re-creation of the rare Pearl-Spot glaze documented on excavated Song-dynasty Jian ware, this bowl follows the compact proportions and restrained curvature characteristic of eleventh–twelfth century tea bowls. Set against a deep ink-blue ground, pale oval spots with soft mineral halos reflect the crystallization structures observed on the limited archaeological examples of this glaze type.
Unlike modern ceramics artificially aged through chemical or mechanical abrasion, this piece develops its subdued, time-softened surface through genuine burial in earth. During burial, natural soil minerals, moisture, and environmental conditions gradually interact with the clay and glaze, producing a patina closer to authentic post-burial aging.
Handmade and wood-fired in Jianyang, Fujian, using local iron-rich clay and naturally iron-bearing mineral glaze. Each dragon-kiln firing develops under unique atmospheric and reduction conditions, resulting in individual crystalline structures that ensure every Pearl-Spot bowl remains one of a kind.
