This three-piece floating-lid Gaiwan reflects the artist’s repeated refinements to its proportions, dimensions, and functional details. Larger than many conventional Gaiwans, its 140 ml capacity (measured to the underside of the lid) and approximately 10 cm diameter provide generous brewing space. The lid rests on the bowl’s rim when opened, eliminating the need for a separate resting place.
Wood-fired in a compartmented dragon kiln at approximately 1100°C, its jade-green mineral glaze develops subtle depth and complexity over the iron-rich clay body, with traces of naturally incorporated wood ash.
This particular jade-like glaze quality is difficult to reproduce consistently. Each firing produces unpredictable colors, making it especially challenging to match three individually hand-thrown components in both glaze character and precise fit.
Handmade in Shuiji Town, Jianyang, Fujian, using local iron-rich clay and natural mineral glaze.
