Firmament is The Phoenix Kiln’s exclusive dragon-kiln wood-fired oil-spot Jian Zhan series. Developed through long-term collaboration with the artist’s studio, the series explores how traditional oil-spot crystallization evolves under authentic wood-firing conditions.
This Magnolia-form masterpiece presents a rare large-scale radial oil-spot structure formed during prolonged dragon-kiln firing. Elongated silver crystals extend outward in layered rings, while subtle blue-silver kiln transformation appears beneath portions of the crystalline field. The combination of broad crystal development, concentric depth, and stable symmetry is especially difficult to achieve in wood-fired oil-spot Jian Zhan.
Within a traditional dragon kiln, flame movement, temperature variation, ash interaction, and kiln position continuously influence how iron crystals separate and expand within the glaze. As a result, each piece develops naturally unique oil-spot density, scale, and crystallization depth.
The Magnolia form itself has a relatively low success rate in high-temperature dragon-kiln firing, making well-balanced examples especially difficult to achieve.
Handmade in Shuiji Town, Jianyang, Fujian, using local iron-rich clay and traditional mineral glazes.
