A Cha-Mo (tea-dust type) Jian Zhan wood-fired in the 100-meter Skyward Dragon Kiln of Jianyang, Fujian.
Fired along the extended flame path of a large dragon kiln, continuous variation in temperature gradients, ash interaction, and oxidation–reduction atmosphere drives phase separation within the iron-rich glaze, forming the crystalline structure characteristic of the Cha-Mo system. In this piece, the distribution shows a dense and continuous field across the interior, reflecting stable formation under sustained firing conditions.
The resulting structure is determined by kiln position and localized firing conditions, with each piece representing a non-repeatable outcome of long-cycle wood firing. Larger forms are inherently more difficult to complete successfully, as the clay body is more susceptible to deformation or collapse under high temperature, and the glaze is more prone to uneven crystallization across a wider surface. Pieces that maintain structural integrity with stable and continuous glaze formation are comparatively limited.
The high iron content of the Jianyang clay body supports stable glaze formation and long-term durability in use.
Handmade in Shuiji Town, Jianyang, Fujian, using local iron-rich clay and naturally iron-bearing mineral glaze.
