Asterism is a rare crystalline result from the hundred-meter Skyward Dragon Kiln wood firing in Jianyang, Fujian. During the extended firing cycle, iron within the glaze migrates and crystallizes under fluctuating oxidation-reduction conditions, forming a dense field of silver-white crystalline clusters across the surface.
The crystals concentrate gradually toward the center of the bowl, creating a natural stellar structure that gives the glaze its name. This effect emerged only once during the firing and was not reproduced in subsequent attempts, making it one of the most distinctive kiln transformations from this firing cycle.
Within the small group of Asterism pieces selected for The Phoenix Kiln, this work represents one of the most refined examples of the series.
Handmade in Shuiji Town, Jianyang, Fujian, using local iron-rich clay and naturally iron-bearing mineral glaze.
