Aurora Cascade is The Phoenix Kiln’s exclusive dragon kiln wood-fired Yohen series. Unlike most pieces that are fired inside protective saggars, this series is exposed to direct flame, allowing fire, ash, and temperature shifts to interact freely with the glaze.
Because of this, the surface does not develop in a single, uniform way. Crystallization can appear on the surface, within the glaze, or across multiple layers at once. In some pieces, these layers overlap; in others, only one or two dominate. The result is a surface that feels open-ended rather than fixed, with each firing producing a different balance of structure and variation.
What makes Aurora Cascade distinct is this combination of Yohen color transformation and crystalline formation. The base glaze and the crystalline structures evolve together, creating depth that changes with light, angle, and use over time.
In daily tea use, this series also develops tea patina relatively quickly. As it builds, the new tones interact with the existing variations in the glaze, layering and shifting over time. Under changing light or movement of the cup, these layers continue to respond, revealing different aspects of the surface rather than a single, fixed appearance.
No two pieces resolve in the same way. Each one reflects the specific conditions of its firing, rather than a controlled or repeatable result.
